The Sheriff's Wireless Division is a group within the Sheriff's Communications Division. This 35 member division is tasked with the maintenance and operation of all wireless communications systems utilized by the County of San Diego. These systems include the Regional Communications Systems (RCS) voice and data networks, the County paging network, the Law Enforcement, Fire and Border Operations Mutual Aid networks, the RACES network and the Sheriff's short range Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN).

The division has three main functional areas. The Administrative group consists of the Manager, Assistant manager, Administrative Assistant and Administrative Secretary. This group administers the division and serves as staff for the Regional Communications System Board of Directors. The RCS Board of Directors runs the RCS under authority granted by the County Board of Supervisors. The Administration group works out of County Operations Center in Building 12.

The Network Operations Group consists of a Telecommunications Technician IV, three Telecommunications Technician III's, and ten Telecommunications Technician II's. This group is responsible for maintaining the operation of the fixed radio systems. These systems include the mountaintop transceiver sites, the Primary Systems Center (PSC), the 13 dispatch centers involved in the RCS and any other radio consoles utilized by the County including the Hospital radio consoles that provide Doctor to Paramedic communications. This group works out of County Operations Center in Building 12.

The User Equipment Maintenance Group consists of a Telecommunications Technician IV, two Telecommunications Technician III's and eleven Telecommunications Technician II's, a Senior Electronic Parts Storekeeper, an Electronic Parts Storekeeper and a Senior Account Clerk. This group is responsible for maintaining all the mobile and portable radio equipment used by the County. This includes making repairs, installing and removing equipment and keeping a parts inventory of about $60,000. This group works out of County Operations Center Building 5, the County Public Works San Marcos Road Maintenance Headquarters radio shop and the Sheriff's Emergency Services Division radio shop at Gillespie Airport in El Cajon.

This division has been in existence since the 1950's and has moved from Public Works, to General Services to the Department of Information Services and finally the Sheriff's Department. During this fifty year history the division has maintained a reputation for customer satisfaction and high technical skill. Ask anyone and they will tell you that the Radio Techs can get it done. The Sheriff's tradition of "Doing More With Less" is not a new tradition to this division.
