The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has been providing contract law enforcement services to the City of Vista since it incorporated in 1963. In the role of the city's "Police Department", deputies of the Vista Station provide all aspects of law enforcement services including patrol, traffic, COPPS, crime prevention, communications, criminal investigations and various management and clerical support services. Additionally, the Vista Sheriff's Station provides law enforcement services, excluding traffic enforcement, to the over 17,000 residents who reside in the surrounding unincorporated community.  The California Highway Patrol provides traffic control and enforcement in these unincorporated areas.

Staffing at the station consists of 116 personnel, under the command of a Sheriff’s Captain, assisted by a Field Lieutenant, an Administrative Lieutenant.

Special community services include juvenile diversion program, street gang investigations, school detectives on middle and high school campuses, and crime prevention. Additionally, the Community Oriented Police Teams focus on a non-traditional approach to crime reduction through interaction with other agencies and local citizens.  Each team consists of one sergeant, four deputies and a secretary.

The Sheriff's Department also provides citizens with a wide variety of other regional services that includes; Aviation support (ASTREA), search and rescue reserves, specialized investigations (homicide, bomb/arson, narcotics, child/elder abuse, financial crimes, domestic violence), a tactical response team (SWAT), canine units, modern crime lab facilities and one of the nation's most modern law enforcement radio communications networks.
