 Historical Information

In August of 1982, the Special Enforcement Detail was formed.  Prior to that, the Sheriff's Department maintained a part time S.W.A.T. Team comprised of Deputies from assignments throughout the Department.  It was realized by the Department's administration that a part time team for a Law Enforcement Agency of this size was inadequate in meeting the increasing demands for tactical resolution to high-risk situations.
S.E.D.'s original manpower was the same as it is today, however the Special Response Team was not implemented until early 1997.  Over time, the Detail's areas of responsibilities have been modified to help meet the needs of the Department and to handle the ever-increasing requests for service.  Originally, S.E.D. was tasked with Under Water Search and Rescue, as well as Canine Explosives Detection.  Today, S.E.D. no longer provides either of those services.

Today's S.E.D. is comprised of Deputy Sheriff's who are experts in highly specialized areas which include:

Tactical Deployment of Chemical Agents      Long Rifle Operators
Less Lethal Weaponry      Explosive Methods of Entry
Tactical Emergency Medical Technicians      Special Weapons & Munitions

     Close Quarter Battle

     Light Rope Rappelling

     Tactical Operations

     Weapons of Mass Destruction

Mobil Field Force Operations      Metropolitan Medical Strike Team
