The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has been providing contract law enforcement services to the City of San Marcos since it incorporated in 1963. In the role of the city's "Police Department," deputies of the San Marcos Station provide all aspects of law enforcement services including patrol, traffic, COPPS, crime prevention, communications, criminal investigations, and various management and clerical support services. Additionally, the San Marcos Sheriff's Station provides law enforcement services, excluding traffic enforcement, to the over 35,000 residents who reside in the surrounding unincorporated community. The California Highway Patrol provides traffic control and enforcement in these unincorporated areas.

Staffing at the station consists of 94 sworn and 9 professional staff, 11 reserves and 2 chaplains under the command of a Sheriff's Captain, assisted by an Administrative Lieutenant and a Field Lieutenant.

Special community services include juvenile diversion detectives, street gang and narcotics team, school resource officers (one at each of the high schools), crime prevention, and a senior volunteer patrol.

The San Marcos station also has two K-9 units working in patrol and the only A. S. T. R. E. A. landing pad at a patrol station, allowing north county deputies to have extended helicopter coverage for law enforcement operations.

In keeping with the Department's Mission Statement of working in partnership with the community, Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, and Juvenile Probation are all housed at the station.

The Sheriff's Department also provides citizens of San Marcos with a wide variety of other regional services that include search and rescue reserves, specialized investigations (homicide, bomb/arson, narcotics, child/elder abuse, financial crimes, domestic violence), a tactical response team (SWAT), modern crime lab facilities and one of the nation's most modern law enforcement radio communications networks.
