About Project Lifesaver

Ramona offers the only electronic tracking program available in San Diego County to help find special needs children and adults who have dementias such as Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, autism, Down syndrome or other cognitive impairments. Often, these individuals will wander away from their homes or care facility and be reported as a MISSING PERSON AT RISK. Project Lifesaver allows for a proactive response by law enforcement if this happens. This not only saves time and manpower, but also gives caregivers and families peace of mind and reassurance that all possible rsources will be utilized in the effort to locate and return their loved one home safely.

History

Project Lifesaver International is a nonprofit program with a mission of locating and returning missing persons. Lt. Karen Kain, Deputy OK Jones and retired Deputy Donna Perone of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Ramona Substation and Gordon Zick of the Ramona Kiwanis Club worked tirelesssly to have the project approved by the County.

How It Works

Participants wear a radio transmitter as they would a wristwatch to help searchers locate them if they wander from home. The caregiver must check the battery every day. The battery is replaced by Sheriff's deputies once a month. The program is currently free to qualifying Ramona residents.

Eligibility Requirements

Person must be at risk because of cognitive impairment or previous walk away experience. Person must have an unbroken chcain of care, 24 hour caregiver.

This is a 501(c)(3) Foundation, which means that all donations are tax deductible. To donate contact Gordon Zick of the Ramona Kiwanis Club at (760) 789-0315. $7,000 has already been spent to set up this program. Bracelets are a one time cost of $285, with $10.00 monthly for each replacement battery. Grants have been received from Kiwanis International, Barona Casino and California, Nevada and Hawaii Kiwanis Foundation. The Rotary Club of Ramona, Ramona Food and Clothees Closet, Ramona VFW Post #3783 and San Vicente Inn have all given very generous donations. Individual contributions will help maintain the program into the future.
