The area of
Ramona was first inhabited by the Diegueno Indians, a semi-nomadic
people who traveled between the coast and the Back Country. Settlers
traveled through the valley until 1843 when the town began as
part of an 18,000 acre mission grant. The town, which was originally
named Nuevo, was a stage stop during the gold rush era. In the
1930's, Ramona called itself "The Turkey Capital of the World"
due to its many turkey ranches and agriculture. Ramona is one
of the oldest established communities in San Diego County. It
has tried to maintain its rural flavor and history while growing
to a population estimated to be 36,405. Today Ramona, located
in the Santa Maria Valley, is also known as the Valley of the
Sun.
Covering an
area of 154 square miles, Deputies, Professional Staff and Volunteers
take pride in serving the public and working closely with our
community to provide the highest quality public safety services.
