Reserve briefing

Volunteers hailing from many walks of life comprise the San Diego County Sheriff's Reserve Support Detail, a law enforcement body larger than many police departments. Photo of Reserve Deputy making a contact
Most of the volunteers are sworn law enforcement personnel serving in patrol, off-road enforcement, underwater recovery, administrative, or search and rescue roles. There are also specialists such as clergy and counselors.
Non-sworn volunteers assist in various capacities. The reserve force also supports an active Explorer program for young men and women 16 to 21 years old. The Explorers are assigned to posts throughout the department
San Diego County reserve deputies serve thousands of hours, saving the taxpayers more than $2 million annually.
To become a candidate for the department's elite reserve force, applicants must pass stringent written, oral and physical examinations, as well as a thorough background investigation. Certain academy courses are required from the 66-hour PC 832 class to a full POST Basic Law Enforcement Academy. This depends upon what role the reserve will fill.
