Command Area: Detention Services Bureau A second generation law enforcement officer, Assistant Sheriff Al Guerin began his law enforcement career with the San Diego Police Department in 1974. Assistant Sheriff Guerin joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1981 as a Lateral Deputy Sheriff, and was promoted to Sergeant in 1991, Lieutenant in 1997, Captain in 2003, Commander in March of 2006 and Assistant Sheriff in November of 2006. During his career, Assistant Sheriff Guerin has worked in Detentions, Patrol, SED, SID, and Training. He currently oversees the Detentions Services Bureau. Outside of his busy law enforcement career, Assistant Sheriff Guerin is on the Board of Directors for two non-profit organizations. He is a founding Director for Angel’s Depot, and Treasurer for the San Diego County Memorial Wake Foundation. He has received many Departmental awards and commendations, as well as civic awards. He was awarded the Medal of Valor from the American Legion for his participation in a S.W.A.T. Operation. Assistant Sheriff Guerin has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. A third generation native San Diegan, Assistant Sheriff Guerin currently resides in the City of Encinitas.
