DETENTION FACILITY SERVICES PHILOSOPHY, GOALS AND POLICIES The Constitutional rights of inmates shall be protected. The basic physical and mental health needs of persons incarcerated within the Sheriff's Detention Facilities shall be maintained. Spiritual support, inmate programs and counseling shall be provided, to the degree possible, with the aim of inducing self-improvement for those incarcerated. The Sheriff's Detention facilities shall be operated in accordance with established Department Policy and Procedures, California State Law, applicable Judicial Case Law, and acceptable professional standards, with the intent of providing a humane, clean, safe, and secure custodial environment. SHERIFFS DETENTION FACILITIES SYSTEM OVERVIEW The Sheriff's Department operates seven major detention facilities. These facilities, commonly called "jails", are spread throughout the county. Each facility, like a navy aircraft carrier, is much like a city itself. A wide variety of services such as laundry, food, education and commissary are necessary and vital to maintaining the day-to-day operation. The Sheriff's detention facilities hold approximately 5,000 inmates on any given day. The routine movement of these inmates to courts, hospitals and between the seven detention facilities requires a fleet of buses, vans, cars and deputy sheriff's to accomplish the task. In addition, approximately 25,000 meals a day must be prepared just to feed the inmates. There is an OVERVIEW of those Detention Facility Services in the library section of our web site. Also an excellent source of information for family and friends of inmates within our system can be found in our Public Information Plan.
