In-Service Training

The In-Service Training Unit is responsible for the majority of the training that law enforcement deputies receive after they graduate from the Academy. Hundreds of courses throughout the state, including many provided by the In-Service Training Unit, are made available to both our sworn and professional staff.

The Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requires that law enforcement deputies and first line supervisors receive a minimum 24 hours of Continuing Professional Training (CPT), to include 14 hours of perishable skills training every 24 months. Perishable skills are identified as being firearms, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operations, and tactical communication.In-Service Training

The 2006-2007 CPT cycle will provide us the opportunity to introduce, train and issue the newly acquired Taser to our patrol and court services personnel.

The In-Service Training Unit has recently partnered with the Emergency Planning and Special Enforcement Detail to present other mandated courses such as the Weapons of Mass Destruction - Level “C” First Responder Operations Course (FRO) and Mobile Field Force Training to patrol station and court services first responders.

In addition to CPT training, the In-Service Training Unit offers the following courses on a continual basis: Drug Influence Investigation/Enforcement, Driving Under the Influence Enforcement, Basic Criminal Investigations, Instructor Development, Techniques of Teaching, Field Training Officer, Supervising Critical Incidents, Basic Supervisory Course, Less Lethal Munitions Course, Building Searches, Rifle Marksmanship Course, and Immediate Action Rapid Deployment.

The In-Service Training Unit has one sergeant and six deputies who coordinate courses and strive to provide the best and most current training available.

Questions or comments regarding the In-Service Training Unit can be directed to Sergeant Pamela Swanegan.
