HUMAN RESOURCES SERVICES BUREAU

The mission of the Human Resources Services Bureau
is to ensure public confidence in the Sheriff's Department
by hiring good people, training them well and monitoring their performance on an on-going basis.

Currently there are over 4,000 employees in the Sheriff's Department, including Law Enforcement and Detentions/Court Services Deputies and Professional Staff (civilians). The Human Resource Services Bureau consists of two divisions; the Personnel Division and the Training Division.

PERSONNEL DIVISION

Under the direction of Captain Sherri Sarro, the Personnel Division is responsible for recruiting, testing and hiring the most qualified candidates for all 100 job classifications in the Sheriff's Department. This division is broken down into several functional units, including Recruiting, Background Investigations and Career Path Assessment.

TRAINING DIVISION

The Training Division is located at the San Diego Regional Public Safety Institute on the campus of Miramar College. Under the direction of Captain Mark Elvin, this Division is responsible for providing timely and relevant training to Department employees in order to ensure job proficiency and safety awareness. The Division is broken down into several functional units, including the Regional Basic Academy, the Detentions/Court Services Academy, In-Service Training, Professional Staff training and the Weapons Training Unit (Range).

Internal Affairs Unit

Under the direction of Lieutenant William Kemery, Internal Affairs is responsible for investigating and properly adjudicating citizen complaints against Department members.  For additional information about registering a commendation or complaint, please click here.

Risk Management Unit

Under the direction of Gloria Shepard, the Risk Management Unit is responsible for assisting employees with administration of various leave benefits and Worker's Compensation claims, and for ensuring compliance with various safety and health regulations. 

BUDGET  

The Human Resource Services' budget is $18.3 million Fiscal Year 2008-09.
