FROM THE FILES OF THE SHERIFF'S MUSEUM:
On April 4, 1988, 38 Corrections Deputies graduated from the first class of the Sheriff's Corrections Academy. With their self-proclaimed motto of "First in Corrections - Second to None", these pioneers were the beginning of a new employee classification that now numbers over 800.
A little over a third of that first class are still with our department, as Deputy Sheriff's - Detentions, Corrections Sergeants and Deputy Sheriffs. No doubt, they can tell you stories about the changes in their jobs that they have seen from the day they hired on. The initial group was trained and assigned to primarily work in positions within a jail that did not have direct contact with inmates, such as control and housing offices. That soon changed and the classification was authorized to carry firearms related to their duties and began transporting inmates to and from facilities. Today, their duties are all encompassing within detentions and the future is for even more opportunities and responsibilities.
