The chemistry intern position is a non-paid commitment of at least six months, or until the intern project is completed, whichever comes first. Chemistry interns are expected to work a minimum of eight hours per week during normal daytime work hours (holidays excluded). They are given a scientific project to complete under the direction of a research mentor. The projects require interns who are self-directed and goal-oriented. Chemistry interns are required to go through in-house safety training in handling biological and chemical hazards prior to working with hazardous materials.

A potential candidate for the position of chemistry intern meets the minimum requirements listed below. Do not apply for this position if you do not meet these minimum requirements.

  • Completion of at least the third year towards a Bachelor of Science degree in a hard science, preferably chemistry;
  • Has hands-on experience in a chemistry laboratory (classes or research projects);
  • Is willing to work with biological and chemical hazards, and;
  • Can pass a background investigation done by the Sheriff's Personnel division.

Preferred experience includes:

  • Completion of a quantitative or analytical chemistry class;
  • Demonstration of success in self-directed projects;
  • Experience performing literature searches;
  • Experience performing validation studies;
  • Experience with digital photography and simple uses of Photoshop, and;
  • Publication or presentation of original research in a reputable scientific journal or at a reputable scientific professional meeting.

If the assigned project is successful interns will benefit by:

  • Publishing or presenting (or both) the results at a professional meeting;
  • Learning about the forensic science surrounding the project;
  • Possible exposure to casework observation, and;
  • Exposure to the internal workings of a crime laboratory.
