As a result of a federal grant awarded to the County of San Diego, Sheriff's Department formed the Domestic Violence Unit in 1997.

The Domestic Violence Detective is responsible for the investigations of crimes associated with the abuse of a spouse, cohabitant, and emancipated minor occurring within the Sheriff’s jurisdiction.

The Unit consists of 1 Lieutenant, 2 Sergeants, 10 Detectives; all of whom have extensive training in family violence issues, 1 light-duty Deputy and 1 Professional Staff member.
