Services - Senior Volunteer Patrol

The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol is made up of seniors age 50 and older. Volunteers working out of the Santee Sheriff's Station patrol in the City of Santee and the unincorporated communities of Lakeside and El Cajon.

Some of the duties of the Volunteer Patrol Program (VPP) are:

  • Make vacation home security checks
  • Visiting the homebound as part of the "You Are Not Alone" program
  • Enforce handicapped parking regulations
  • Patrol in vehicles clearly marked as part of the Volunteer Patrol Program
  • Assist Crime Prevention with public presentations and program development
  • Conduct residential and business security surveys
  • Provide citizen assistance (such as information, directions, etc.)
  • Assisting with traffic control
  • Marking abandoned vehicles
  • Providing crime information and other services
  • Other assigned jobs or services as needed

The Volunteer Patrol Program is designed to draw upon the experience of the senior citizens in our community, tapping a tremendous resource, and developing it as an asset to the Santee Sheriff's Station in a nonconfrontational manner. Volunteer Patrol Program personnel will provide valuable assistance to existing staff as we all strive to increase the quality of life in our community.

Volunteers must have a valid California driver's license and auto insurance. Due to the sensitive nature of the job, volunteers will be subject to a background investigation consisting of DMV and criminal history checks.

A Senior Volunteer Patrol applicant must attend a formal training academy. Academy training includes CPR, first aid, public relations, chain of command, rules and regulations, radio procedures, safe driving, map reading, crime prevention, traffic control and patrol observations. Also covered are procedures for doing security checks of homes and businesses, fingerprinting, report writing, parking enforcement, sexual harassment and the YANA (You Are Not Alone) program.
