To begin the process you must first apply either on-line at http://dhr-jam.sdcounty.ca.gov/announcements/05300111.html or apply in person at the Human Resources office located in the County Administration Center on 1600 Pacific Highway. Once your application is reviewed and you are eligible a notice will be mailed to inform you of the scheduled testing date. Due to the nature of the job, the hiring process t o screen for qualified candidates to become a Sheriff's Detentions Processing Technician is lengthy. The following is the hiring process, step-by-step:

1. Take the Detentions Processing Technician exam. The test is scored and you will receive a passing or non-passing score by mail in 3-4 weeks. If you receive a passing score you will be eligible for hiring for 1 year.
2. You will receive a notice for an oral interview. This interview is typically conducted by 2-3 interviewers.
3. Upon passing the oral interview, you are given a Personal History Statement (PHS or background packet) to complete and return in two weeks or less. The information you place in the PHS is what the background investigator uses to conduct a complete background investigation.
4. Upon successful completion of the background investigation, you are scheduled for a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination. The CVSA is similar to a polygraph examination.
5. Upon successful completion of the CVSA examination, you are scheduled for a physical examinination by a County medical doctor.
6. Upon successful completion of the physical examination, you are given a date to begin work.
