Coaster Railroad Enforcement Unit

Coaster with Sheriff Seal The Sheriff's Department Railroad Enforcement Unit operates out of the Encinitas Station and provides contracted law enforcement services for the North County Transit District's 62 miles of rail lines. The "Coaster" unit's deputy sheriffs provide security along the railroad's right-of-way as well as on the commuter trains themselves. This unit has been active since 1995.

Coaster Safety Hints

Coaster Unit duties include enforcing trespassing laws, including removal of discarded debris as well as encampments inhabited by homeless persons and day laborers. Joggers, hikers and others "taking shortcuts" are dispersed for their own protection. Many people die every year nationwide -- including the tracks from San Diego to Oceanside and Escondido -- because of inattention to rail safety precautions. The Encinitas Sheriff's Station Coaster Unit is responsible for such accident investigations in this area.

On-going training ensures that the unit maintains high standards. Each deputy has attended "Operation Lifesaver" and "Grade Crossing Collision Investigation" courses. Certified instructors in the unit teach railroad safety courses to truckers, bus drivers and other commercial drivers plus such public groups as school and emergency services personnel including police, fire fighters and paramedics.

Coaster deputies maintain an active public information program to warn the public of the dangers trains present and provide helpful hints learned from "Operation Lifesaver." The unit conducts presentations and offers valuable safety tips at local schools, Girl and Boy Scout groups and civic organizations.

If your group wishes to schedule a "Coaster" safety presentation, telephone 760-966-3519.
