Serving the Needs of San Diego County

Staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Sheriff's Communications Center provides the highest quality, professionally competent public safety services to over one million residents of San Diego County.

The Sheriff's Department is the largest law enforcement agency in the county, with a jurisdiction spanning more than 3600 square miles.  The Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement and public safety services to all unincorporated areas of the county.  Additionally, the department provides contracted, municipal law enforcement and public safety services for nine incorporated cities within the county, which includes Encinitas, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Vista, San Marcos, Poway, Santee, Lemon Grove, and Imperial Beach.

Emergency Services Dispatchers process over 1600 calls for law enforcement services each day, with approximately one third of those being 9-1-1 calls.  In addition to providing communications services to the various divisions in the Sheriff's Department, the center provides communications services for a myriad of other county agencies, including Public Works, Roads Department, Probation, and the District Attorney's Office.

During the year of 2007, Sheriff’s Dispatchers handled approximately 171,000 9-1-1 calls (30,300 of these calls were wireless), with the average caller only having to wait 5 seconds before their call was answered (the State recommended maximum average answering time is 10 seconds).  Dispatchers answered approximately 438,000 calls on the administrative (non-emergency) lines, with the average caller only waiting 40 seconds.
